How to break my addiction?

Ok, I finally realized that I am addicted to my computer. It is a sly little devil, that laptop of mine. The damn thing has already cost me one angioplasty (heart surgery) and I'm pretty sure I will need Lap band or some other weight loss surgery of some kind soon too. It's like I'm a rock star addicted to cocaine. Maybe I could sue Microsoft or Dell and charge that they are in a conspiracy with the health care industry. Maybe Google too. That damn thing keeps me glued to my chair, reading, blogging, but mostly getting fat and out of shape. I should be working out instead sitting here being assaulted by this cold-blooded killer. It's a vicious battle, the pounds keep piling on. I need a plan, a way to break free of the spell of this serial killer. Any thoughts?

Hi Lincoln,

Dr Horner ask me to give you her thoughts.  She is unavailable at this time.

First you have recognized the problem, that is a great first step.

Now you need to put a plan in action.

First you need to set a timer by your computer.  Set up a time every day to get up and away from the computer.  Start with small amount of time and gradually build up to 15 minutes 4 to 10 times a day.  Do not allow any excuses.  When the timer goes off, no matter what you are doing, you get up from the computer as if your home was on fire.  This time is to be used for walking or simple strength training exercises. Do not eat during these short scheduled breaks.  Be sure and get check out by your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Never eat while setting at your computer.  When eating at your computer or in front of the TV, you eat mindlessly, not a good thing when you need to watch your weight.

After getting your doctors approval, join a weight loss program.

Weight Watchers, Spark People, The biggest Loser and/or a local gym.

There are many other weight loss sites, choose one that makes you feel comfortable and motivates you.

Like any addiction, you must want to break the hold the computer has on you. To help you break the cords that bind you, blog about your journey to break the hold and the weight you lose while breaking the hold.

Keep Dr. Horner and her listeners apprised of your journey.

sorry to hear about your angioplasty. How did your Medical Insurance react to this issue? I hope that your Short Term Health Insurance was able to take care of the heart surgery. You might have also looked at Catastrophic Health Insurance.
