My guest today is Michelle Hodge, a chiropractor and an expert in a technology called thermography—which uses an infrared camera to take pictures of the body. The pictures reveal abnormal heat and blood vessel patterns in the body which are associated with abnormal physiology. Michelle’s expertise is primary in using thermography for the breast as a screening tool. She is going to tell us about thermography, it’s history of use, how it is currently being used and the possible role it may play in the future for breast cancer detection and prevention.

Dr. Hodge received her doctorate of chiropractic degree at Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1993 and her certification in Clinical Thermography in 2005. She received the Excellence in Public Health Award for introducing new methods of breast cancer detection to Shasta County in 2006. She and her husband have a chiropractic practice together for the last 15 years in Redding California—Hudson and Hodge Chiropractic. Dr. Hodge also runs the Redding Thermography clinic. She is currently working with a team of doctors to begin research using breast thermography and 3-D ultrasound. I have observed many women turn their lives around and lead healthier lifestyles, soon after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Sometimes cancer was caught early, but many times it escaped detection until well over a centimeter in size or after it had already become invasive. Yet, we have a screening test available that not only detects breast cancer and precancerous changes in the breast, but also provides a warning before cancer forms. This can allow women time to make changes to lower their risk and improve their breast health. Why do so few people know about this advanced technology called medical infared imaging or thermography? Four years ago when faced with my own breast concern, I discovered for the first time, this valuable, adjunctive screening test. In this podcast, I will discuss thermography’s past, present, and future role in early breast cancer detection and prevention. My name is Michelle Hodge, and I have been practicing as a chiropractor for about fifteen years with my husband at Hudson and Hodge Chiropractic and Redding Thermography. We reside in beautiful Redding, CA with our ten year-old daughter. In 2005, I completed certification training as a thermographic technician. I perform full body scans, but most of my business is centered around breast cancer screening. I have had the honor of working with other dedicated health care professionals to direct timely, follow-up medical care for women with breast concerns. In 2006, I received an Excellence in Public Health Award for introducing new methods of breast cancer detection to Shasta County. I am currently working with a team of doctors to begin research using breast thermography and 3D ultrasound.
